Football in Rio is more than a football film.
It is a journey through the people, railways, ports, factories and communities that transformed an English game into Brazil's greatest passion.
Currently in production.
About the Film
Football in Rio – More Than a Game is an independent feature documentary exploring the history, culture and identity of football in Rio de Janeiro.
Travelling from Britain to Brazil, the film uncovers the remarkable journey that brought football to Brazilian shores before following its transformation into one of the world's greatest sporting cultures.
From the remarkable story of the two British pioneers who brought football to Brazil, to the railways, ports and factories that helped shape the early game, Football in Rio goes beyond the accepted history to explore the people, places and communities behind football's remarkable journey.
But this is only the beginning.
The film also explores the unique identities of Rio's historic clubs, the rivalries that divide families and neighbourhoods, the legendary stadiums, the supporters, and the culture that turned football into far more than just a sport.
Because in Rio de Janeiro, football isn't simply played.
It is lived.
Why this film?
After spending years documenting football culture across Brazil, one question kept coming back:
How did football become so deeply rooted in Rio de Janeiro?
The deeper the research went, the more it became clear that this story is about far more than football.
It is a story of migration.
Industry.
Railways.
Communities.
And the people who unknowingly helped shape the world's greatest football nation.
